Opdenergy starts the construction of the Sol de Los Andes PV Plant of 104MWp in Chile

2 February 2021

  • The project, located in the Atacama region, requires an investment of 90 million dollars
  • The construction works are on schedule after having received a large part of the materials at the power plant

Opdenergy, an Independent Power Producer with extensive experience in the development, financing, construction and operation of renewable assets, has started the construction works of Sol de Los Andes PV Plant in Chile, located in the Atacama region, which will have a capacity equivalent to 104 MWp.

This project represents an investment of US$ 90 million and will be composed of 239,580 PV modules. This is the company’s second large scale project in the country, as the first is La Estrella Wind Farm, another project currently under construction in the O’Higgins region of Chile.

This plant is located at 15 kilometers from Diego de Almagro, in the Atacama region, in an area with high radiation levels. This project has optimal conditions for the use of solar energy, which, along with a complete engineering process, will allow the park to operate with optimal levels of efficiency. The construction of this project, which will generate more than 340 jobs in the region, while fulfilling rigorous sanitary protocols, is progressing according to the schedule after having received a large part of the materials at the plant. Furthermore, Sol de los Andes will generate the 50% of the energy committed by the company through the contract awarded in the “Supply Bidding for Customers subject to Price Regulation 2015/01”.

Carlos Ortiz, Opdenergy’s Country Manager in Chile stated: “The beginning of Sol de Los Andes is another milestone for Opdenergy in the country and we hope that, despite the challenges faced by the prevention of infections and mobility restrictions, we will be able to finish its construction and start operations in the third quarter of 2021, thus contributing to the green matrix of the country and the economic reactivation of the region”.

Opdenergy has a portfolio of solar and wind investments in Chile of more than US$800 million to reach 1GW in the next 4 years. In addition to large-scale projects, the Company is building three PV projects corresponding to the PMGD (Small Medium Distributed Generation) segment in the Valparaiso Region. In this way, it will add 182 MW in Chile, the equivalent of avoiding the emission of 23,500 tons of CO2 when compared to other energy sources, becoming a relevant actor within the national industry.
